26TH STREET OVERVIEW

YEAR BUILT:

1870s-1980s

HISTORY

26th Street features a few historic houses, but most are post-1950. Nearly all of the houses, churches, a school, and other buildings on the west side (and to the River) were wiped out by highway construction in the 1950s-1960s. There several interesting artistic installations, include Albert Paley's functional gates.

RECOLLECTIONS

"In the early 2000's, my parents, FB residents Bob and Norrene Vogt organized regular clean ups of the 26th St. Park and dog park areas. A group of neighbors joined in the volunteer efforts and were rewarded with a catered lunch. I lived in Arlington, Virginia at the time, but would often join." Denise Vogt, 2025
